Dear BSL Community Members,

Are you interested in British Sign Language, and how signs develop and relate to our real-world experiences? You might’ve considered how a BSL sign can mean a few different things. For example, the BSL sign for RUN can also mean RACE, JOG, or ATHLETIC. You've also likely noticed that RUN and JOG look just like what they mean in real life, as do many other signs in BSL.

If those things interest you, and you are deaf, fluent in BSL, and over 18 years old, then consider participating in one or two of our research studies!

Our joint sign language research teams at the University of Birmingham in the UK and the University of Cologne in Germany are exploring British Sign Language and German Sign Language (DGS) to take a closer look at these phenomena in sign languages. Data on BSL and DGS are being compared to understand how meanings and signs develop in the language of deaf people.

Deaf Ph.D. researcher, Nia Lazarus, and hearing Ph.D. researcher, Annika Schiefner, both from the University of Cologne, will be leading two studies 9-18 March 2022 at the University of Birmingham at the Department of English Language and Linguistics (navigation assistance provided).

Information about participation:

  • Two separate studies, you can decide to participate in 1 or both
  • Each study will take about 1 hour, £20 per hour, including a break between the studies
  • Travel costs will be reimbursed up to £20
