Advanced module 8 "Teaching of writing skills

Nature of the test
A portfolio is planned as a module final examination. It is an individual performance. The joint creation of a portfolio is not permitted.

Formal and content-related examination requirements
At the centre of the approximately fifteen-page portfolio is the description of ten self-developed support units for improving the writing skills of children or young people with learning problems. It is preceded by a short introduction (approx. two pages) and an outline of the target group for which the intervention is intended (approx. one page). It is possible to add an appendix to the portfolio if required (there is no guideline regarding the number of pages in the appendix). There are no guidelines regarding the number of characters, font size, line spacing or other formal aspects.

The promotion should be designed in such a way that it can be carried out with several pupils or even with an entire class. The approach should be aimed at improving the ability to write a specific type of text (narrative, informative, argumentative, ...). Where it is appropriate for the pupils concerned, the series may focus on a specific aspect of the writing process (planning, writing or revising) or on specific skills (e.g. ability to adopt a perspective or coherence).

In the introduction, the objectives of the units should be derived conclusively on the basis of at least one well-founded writing model and with reference to relevant studies. Furthermore, the basic concept of the series shall be presented. Here, among other things, the contents conveyed in the units of the module and suitable literature are to be referred to. The description of the group of pupils shall contain all information relevant to the promotion. When presenting the units, a uniform scheme is to be observed (e.g. objectives, materials, procedure, learning objectives check).

Period of the examination
The portfolio is to be prepared in the period between the start of the course and a fixed deadline at the end of the semester. In a summer semester, the deadline is 30.09., in a winter semester 31.03. The portfolio should be e-mailed in pdf format to matthias.gruenke@uni-koeln.de.

Aim of the examination
By creating a portfolio, students should show that they have achieved the learning outcomes described in the module handbook.

Prerequisite for participation in the examination
In order to be able to participate in the examination, both courses of the module must have been successfully completed in advance.

Registration modalities for the exam

The registration is done via Klips 2.0, please pay attention to the corresponding deadlines. If you do not want to or cannot hand in your portfolio in time after your registration, you must cancel your registration via Klips 2.0 up to two weeks before the respective examination date. A mail to the secretary's office or the lecturer does not replace the cancellation via Klips 2.0. After the two weeks have expired, a cancellation without a valid reason (e.g. illness) is no longer possible. In this case, failure to pass the exam will be considered a failed attempt. If the examination cannot be taken for a valid reason, the Examination Office must be immediately sent a confirmation of the reason for the cancellation (e.g. medical certificate). Send your confirmation exclusively to the Examination Office. Only the Examinations Office can confirm the withdrawal with good reason and withdraw your registration. Furthermore, the examiners must be informed of the withdrawal by e-mail.

Procedure of the examination
The portfolio will be created on the basis of these notes and some additional information provided during the two module sessions. In addition, it is possible for students to discuss their plans with the lecturer during a specially arranged consultation appointment.

Criteria for evaluating the examination
Evaluation criteria are (1) the completeness of the editing, (2) the empirical soundness of the units, (3) the arrangement and design of the contents, (4) the originality of the editing, (5) the quality of the materials and (6) the external form of the document.

Communication of the examination result

The score can be viewed in KLIPS 2.0 approximately one month after the end of the submission.

Value of the exam
The module grade for the overall grade is 6/18.

Possibilities of repeating the examination
The examination can be repeated twice.
