Focus Module 3 “Teaching in Secondary School”

Type of examination

In the winter semester 2026/27, the module examination is a term paper (2 credit points). Guidance on the term paper is provided in the guidelines in the ILIAS course.

From the summer semester 2027, the module examination will be an electronic open-book examination held in the PC pool of Digital Examinations at the University of Cologne. The only permitted aids will be summaries you have written yourself of the examinable journal articles.

Examination content

The examination is based on the article corpus of the seminars SM3.1 and SM3.2 on reading, writing, mathematics, vocational preparation and teacher self-efficacy. The articles and the corresponding learning modules are available in the ILIAS course.

Aim of the examination

The examination assesses in-depth knowledge of the focus module. Students demonstrate that they understand key findings of current research and can apply them to teaching adolescents with learning disabilities.

Examination period

The term paper is due, and from the summer semester 2027 the examination takes place, on the date listed in KLIPS 2.0. Resit dates are scheduled during the lecture-free period, usually in the last two weeks of the semester.

Prerequisites for participation

According to the module handbook, completion of Focus Module 1 is a prerequisite for this module. Credit points are awarded for attending the courses and passing the module examination.

Registration and deregistration

You register for the examination via KLIPS 2.0. Please observe the relevant deadlines. If, after registering, you do not wish to or cannot take the examination, you must deregister via KLIPS 2.0 no later than two weeks before the examination date. An e-mail to the secretary's office or to the lecturers does not replace deregistration via KLIPS 2.0. After this deadline, deregistration is no longer possible without a valid reason (e.g. illness); failure to attend will then be counted as a failed attempt. If you cannot take the examination for a valid reason, you must immediately send the Examinations Office a document stating the reason (e.g. a medical certificate). Send this document exclusively to the Examinations Office; only the Examinations Office can confirm a withdrawal for a valid reason and cancel your registration. In addition, please inform the examiners of your withdrawal by e-mail.

Assessment criteria

Points are awarded for the examination tasks. Grading follows the grading scale of the Examination Regulations of the University of Cologne for the Master of Education, Teacher Training for Special Educational Needs.

Notification of results

You will be informed of your result via KLIPS 2.0. Grades are usually posted during the lecture-free period and no later than the beginning of the lecture period of the following semester.

Weighting

The module grade counts 6/18 towards the overall grade.

Resits

The examination can be repeated twice.
