Certificate Course in “Digital Teaching and Learning Methods”
Each semester, the Media Network of the Faculty of Human Sciences offers a limited number of students the opportunity to independently design, produce, and adapt digital learning media for educational use under expert guidance. The course combines theory and practice: from concept development and media production to quality assurance through structured peer feedback.
A curated selection of successful projects can be published on courseblog.de after the course ends, at the authors’ request—thereby increasing visibility beyond the course.
Milestones M1–M4
Participants develop four sequential milestones based on a self-selected overarching theme. The overarching theme is planned using a concept map following the mandatory first session.
- M1 (Portfolio): Design and production of a podcast episode – fundamentals of audiovisual design using Audacity
- M2 (Portfolio): Original illustration with OER-compliant source work and legally compliant licensing
- M3 (Portfolio): Educast streaming video – screencasting with PowerPoint, publication via Opencast
- M4 (Assessment): Development of an interactive learning unit with H5P and a digital final test in the ILIAS LMS
Topics such as interaction design, OER licensing, and digital exam formats will also be covered. Extensive exercises in ILIAS support discussion and collaboration. Required content can be explored in greater depth independently, depending on interest.
Prerequisites for participation
- Basic research skills: Confident use of digital information sources and self-study materials
- Personal device: A functional PC or laptop (< 5 years old) for independent project work
- Didactic readiness: Interest in the structured preparation of subject-specific content for digital teaching formats
- Reliable participation: Regular attendance starting with the mandatory first session
- Time management: Ability to complete all four milestones in ILIAS by the deadlines – workload approx. 15–30 hours per milestone
Note: Attendance at the first session is mandatory. In case of absence, the spot will be forfeited in favor of alternates.
Completion and Certificate
Successful completion of all four milestones leads to the award of the “Digital Teaching and Learning Methods” author certificate—an in-house development of the Center Network Media at the Faculty of Human Sciences, University of Cologne.
