ICDL Certification at the Centre for Networks and Media

The Centre for Networks and Media is an accredited ICDL Test Centre at the University of Cologne – and the only university-based test centre in North Rhine-Westphalia. Since 2026, the Centre holds the distinction of being awarded the title "ICDL Centre for Digital Competence Development (ZDiK)" by DLGI mbH.

The ICDL (International Certification of Digital Literacy) is the world's leading standard for digital skills – available in over 100 countries via a network of more than 20,000 test centres. Governments, international organisations (e. g. UNESCO), schools, universities and companies recognise the ICDL certificate as a reliable proof of competence – ideal for job applications, teacher training programmes and career entry.

Preparation and Courses

We offer preparatory courses as part of the Studium Integrale programme. Participation is voluntary – those who prefer to prepare independently will find learning materials and self-study resources directly in the ILIAS test centre. All courses can be booked via KLIPS.

The skills and knowledge required to pass each module are set out in the respective syllabus. Several educational publishers also offer preparatory materials for the ICDL.

Modules and Certificates

The ICDL Profile Certificate is awarded upon passing 4 module tests of your choice. The ICDL Workforce Certificate comprises 7 specified modules with a focus on IT security and workplace skills. Advanced and specialist modules are also available.

Examinations at the University of Cologne

Students and staff of the University of Cologne may sit ICDL module tests at reduced university rates. Under a university framework agreement with DLGI, the test centre is exclusively available to enrolled students of the University of Cologne.

All module tests required for a certificate must be passed within three years of the first test date.
