Experience Augmentative and Alternative Communication – “Maus” Open House Day at the Augmentative and Alternative Communication Center (FBZ UK)
On October 3, 2025, the Supported Communication Counseling Center once again opened its doors to interested families who wanted to experience supported communication as part of the “Türen auf mit der Maus” Day 2025. Under the WDR motto “SpielZeit,” 30 families attended.

After a group introduction, the children had the opportunity to visit many different stations where they could try out what it’s like to communicate not with their mouths, but through gestures, communication boards, and electronic communication aids while playing and reading together.

Meanwhile, their parents spoke with Kathrin Klapper and learned more about her life as a scientist who uses augmentative and alternative communication at the University of Cologne. Immediately afterward, engaging conversations developed that were surely continued at home within the families. The team from the Department of Education for People with Physical and Motor Impairments and the AAC Advisory Center is looking forward to the "Maus" Open House on October 3, 2026.
