Open doors with the mouse

Video production: Chair of Education for People with Physical and Motor Developmental Disabilities

Dear Maus fans!

The time has come—on October 3, 2024, it’s “Open Doors with the Mouse”! Come on in, because this year we’ve come up with something very special for you. We are a team at the University of Cologne that researches and teaches Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). At our counseling center, we help people of all ages who cannot or no longer communicate through spoken language. Together with their families and other experts, we find alternative communication options at the AAC counseling center so that they can actively participate in life.

There are many tools available for alternative communication, such as sign language, a gaze alphabet, communication boards, or talking tablets.

On October 3, children between the ages of 6 and 10 can come to us to experience what it’s like to communicate without using their mouths. We’ll sing using sign language, spell out names with a gaze-based alphabet, read books using a communication board, and control tablets with our eyes to ask questions. For parents, Kathrin Klapper will share insights into her life as a working woman who uses supported communication.
