Discussion Event on the Topic of Freedom
On December 11, 2024, the Chair of PEDAGOGY AND REHABILITATION FOR PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL AND COMPLEX DISABILITIES (Prof. Dr. Bernasconi) hosted a lively panel discussion on the topic of freedom. The event highlighted that freedom has many facets and is experienced differently in various areas of life.
Together with the speakers Sandra Lins, Maximilian Westphal, and Anne Christin Löwe—all experienced self-advocates—key questions were discussed: What does freedom mean in terms of housing? The ability to choose one’s own roommates, to move freely within one’s own home, or perhaps even to own a house with a garden? How does freedom manifest in leisure activities? Financial leeway for activities or freedom from the stress of leisure? And what does freedom mean in the realm of health? The choice of doctors or the freedom to make unhealthy decisions?

The speakers explored these questions both from a personal perspective and in light of the experiences of other people with learning difficulties. The discussion was complemented by short video statements from people in various stages and situations of life, which were created as part of a student project.

In dialogue with the audience, it became clear how diversely freedom is experienced and, at the same time, how much it can be individually compromised. The event offered numerous thought-provoking insights for everyone involved—both on stage and in the audience—and opened up new perspectives on what freedom can mean in one’s own life.
