StudiOS – The free operating system for students at the University of Cologne
StudiOS is an operating system that has been enhanced and customized by the Netzwerk Medien of the Faculty of Human Sciences at the University of Cologne, specifically tailored to the needs of students. It is based on Linux/UbuntuBudgie and offers a stable, secure, and user-friendly environment for studying, research, and teaching.
Motivation
The staff at the Media Network aim to develop a simple operating system that is particularly easy for students at the University of Cologne to use and that works on all devices. We develop and maintain this system as part of our regular work without additional funding or third-party grants because we are convinced of its benefits.Everything you need for your studies
StudiOS is ready to use right away and already includes all the important programs and tools needed for everyday student life—including:
- Office and word processing programs
- Statistical and programming tools
- Communication and learning platforms
- Useful tools for organization, research, and presentations
This allows students to get started right after installation—without any extra effort.
Powerful, sustainable, and resource-efficient
A particular advantage of StudiOS is its compatibility with older hardware. The system runs reliably even on devices that are no longer suitable for modern Windows versions.
Especially now that support for Windows 10 is ending and Windows 11 isn’t supported on many older computers, StudiOS is an attractive, sustainable, and free alternative for students.
Open, secure, and customizable
Thanks to its open Linux base, StudiOS is not only free but also transparent, secure, and customizable. This allows the system to be flexibly adapted to personal needs and academic disciplines.
