Daniel von Orloff studied social sciences/economics and politics and German at the University of Cologne with the aim of becoming a teacher at secondary schools and comprehensive schools. In 2025, he was awarded the Elinor Ostrom Prize for socio-economic education and science for his master's thesis. In his dissertation, which is being written as part of the project ‘Effects of railway liberalisation on railway workers’ funded by the Vienna Chamber of Labour, he deals with the employment conditions of workers in European rail transport. The focus is on the question of what impact the liberalisation policy initiated by the European Union has on employment conditions and the structure of railway companies. With his work, he aims to contribute to the critical analysis of the social consequences of European transport policy and to develop perspectives for a sustainable and fair design of the sector.
