Pilot study on disclosure of chronic health conditions in the workplace
The pilot study on disclosing a chronic illness at work focuses on the previously little-explored decision-making process of employees with chronic illnesses as to whether and how they should talk about their illness at work. As a result of demographic change and a shortage of skilled workers, the number of chronically ill employees is increasing. Since employers are only gradually coming to terms with these changes and developing appropriate personnel and corporate strategies, employees who are confronted with the diagnosis of a chronic illness are usually left alone with the difficult decision of whether and how they should communicate this to their employer. As part of the pilot study, relevant theories and empirical findings on this decision-making process will be compiled and our own data will be collected through expert interviews and a survey of those affected.
