“Information campaign for doctoral students with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses at the University of Cologne”

Background

In efforts to create an inclusive university, the focus is often still on students and the general conditions of study. Little consideration has been given to the fact that some of these students remain at university after completing their studies in order to pursue a doctorate or an academic career. This is where the practice-oriented research project “PROMI – Doctorate Inclusive” for those interested in doctoral studies and doctoral candidates with disabilities comes in, in which structural and psychological barriers in the “science system” were uncovered, individual, institutional and political ways to overcome them were identified, networks were established and aids for action were developed. The website https://promi.uni-koeln.de is an information and networking platform that is unique in Germany on the subject of “Doing a doctorate with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses in Germany”. The website brings together information on doctoral-related and disability-related questions and prepares them for various target groups (those interested in doctoral studies/doctoral candidates, supervisors and graduate institutions).

Objectives

The information campaign “Doing a doctorate with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses at the University of Cologne” is intended to make these as part of the PROMI project developed resources known to the relevant target groups at the University of Cologne and to raise the topic of “Doing a doctorate with disabilities and/or chronic diseases” should receive increased attention. For this purpose, we develop information materials and social media posts, organize events and promote networking. Target groups and networking partners are doctoral candidates and students interested in doctoral studies as well as relevant actors at the University of Cologne (e.g. the graduate institutions, the representative for students with disabilities and chronic illnesses or the Inclusion Service Center). The combination of providing information materials and involving and raising awareness among higher education stakeholders ensures sustainable benefits for the coming years.
