Insights into methods and formats of transcultural music education with members of the asambura ensemble

Tue, May 5 | 2:00 PM | Music Room 3.115

The asambura ensemble reinterprets, contextualizes, and reimagines classical music: with diverse cultural, interreligious, and post-migrant perspectives on dialogue, both sonically and with sensitivity to diversity.

Musicians of diverse origins and affiliations interact within the asambura ensemble and its associated outreach collective. In doing so, asambura dedicates itself to those voices that have often been overlooked, suppressed, or silenced in our world—through discrimination, violence, displacement, or death. Their stories, memories, and sounds form the starting point for new musical narratives.

Lecture: “Safer Space and Empowerment Practices in Music Production Workshops”
7:00–8:00 PM
DJing Lab (Room 2.106), HumF, Gronewaldstr. 2, 50931 Cologne

Rena Janßen’s (Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media) lecture takes these structural conditions as its starting point and examines safer space and empowerment practices in music production workshops. Drawing on her doctoral research, she analyzes the significance of such workshops for facilitators and participants and discusses which practices are perceived as empowering. Finally, she discusses how safer space and empowerment practices can be critically established within institutionalized music education contexts and presents ideas for intersectional-sensitive music education.

The lecture is open to the public and is aimed at anyone interested. Registration at chris.kattenbeck@uni-koeln.de

Community Music Training: Fundamentals of Inclusive Practice in Community Music | Sat, April 25, 2026, 10:00 AM–4:30 PM

Dortmund Concert Hall

How can we truly reach and empower people with diverse accessibility needs in our music projects? In a two-part training session, British expert Ben Sellers teaches the fundamentals of inclusive practice as well as concrete methods for implementation in one’s own field of work. Part 1 introduces the Social Model of Disability and demonstrates how this understanding shapes community music programs. Part 2 focuses on practical application: from inclusive planning through warm-ups and songwriting to the use of iPads and other accessible technologies.

Ben Sellers is one of the leading voices in inclusive music education in the UK and works internationally with orchestras, educational institutions, and cultural organizations.

The training is aimed at anyone who wishes to develop music programs for diverse groups. It will be conducted in English. Participation is free of charge.

Please register by email at matthias.witt@konzerthaus-dortmund.de (including your name, position if applicable, and any accessibility needs).

New episode of the "Musikwelten NRW" podcast:

Nuances. Dealing with Musical Diversity

What comes to mind when we hear the word “nuances”? The micro-intervals between the pitches of different musical cultures, the unspoken between the lines, or those spaces of encounter where cultural differences are experienced not as obstacles but as enrichment.

It is precisely these spaces that the North Rhine-Westphalia State Music Council has been dedicating itself to since 2025 with its three-year focus topic. In the podcast of the same name from Musikwelten NRW, host Tuba Tunçak interviewed three experts who shed light on the topic from different perspectives: music ethnologist Prof. Dr. Julio César Mendívil, Secretary General of the State Music Council of North Rhine-Westphalia Prof. Dr. Robert von Zahn, and diversity researcher Prof. Dr. Marion Gerards.
