Department Kunst und Musik (DKM)

Welcome to the Website of the Department of Art and Music!

The Department of Art and Music (DKM) is characterized by close interdisciplinary collaboration between the two disciplines. This collaboration in research and teaching focuses on the intersection of the arts, media, and education. The focus of this shared interest is on how processes of social transformation and the arts are mutually interdependent—with regard, for example, to changing aesthetic educational processes, media-based and material artistic practices, models of social cohesion, digital cultures, and challenges posed by AI. A particular research interest also lies in questions of cultural and social diversity and inclusion; this includes, among other things, research on the global histories of interconnections in art and music, the relationship between art and music and migration, art and music education practices that challenge discrimination, and the contribution of the arts and aesthetic education to issues of sustainability. The DKM’s research profile reflects a close integration of academic and artistic-practical research. The exchange with society is realized through numerous activities and institutional partnerships.

At the DKM, we offer five degree programs at the BA and MA levels: the teacher-training programs in “Aesthetic Education,” “Art,” and “Music” (for various types of schools), as well as the specialized programs in “Intermedia” and “Music Education.” Under the “Study Programs” tab, you’ll find more information about the respective course content, faculty, current events, and student councils.

The Institute for European Ethnomusicology, as a research institution, is also part of the Department of Art and Music.
