Health Services Research (M.Sc., SM 2c)

The “Specialization Module 2c: Research Methods and Health Services Research Using Secondary Data” comprises:

a) a lecture (2 credits)
b) a seminar (2 credits)
c) a module exam in the form of a term paper (5 credits)

Lecture

The lecture “Methods of Descriptive and Inferential Statistics in Evaluation and Intervention Research” covers fundamental theoretical approaches and standards of empirical (qualitative and quantitative) evaluation and intervention research.

In addition to fundamental research standards, both experimental and non-experimental designs are examined.

In the course, students will become familiar with both univariate and multivariate topics and will be able to interpret them.

The following key areas are covered:

  • Fundamentals of evaluation and intervention research
  • Data collection
  • Data analysis
  • Application

Specifically, this includes the following content:

  • Design of evaluation and intervention studies
  • Characteristics of quantitative and qualitative research strategies and their integration within the framework of evaluation and intervention research
  • Research planning and study designs, with particular attention to the various stakeholders and perspectives
  • Selected quantitative data collection and analysis methods
  • Selected qualitative data collection and analysis methods
  • Selected descriptive methods in quantitative research
  • Selected inferential statistical methods in quantitative research
  • Application of descriptive and inferential statistical methods using tables, and independent performance of statistical calculations and interpretation of results
  • Basic research
  • Intervention research
  • Evaluation research

Seminar

External seminar led by Prof. Dr. Holger Pfaff in cooperation with the PMV Research Group (Ingo Meyer, Dr. Peter Ihle) on research methods and health services research using secondary data

Module objectives and competencies to be acquired according to the module handbook (research methodology component)

After participating in the module sessions, students will be able to …

  • to describe and explain fundamental theoretical approaches and standards of empirical (qualitative and quantitative) evaluation and intervention research.
  • to identify basic experimental and non-experimental designs in evaluation and intervention research.
  • classify basic qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods in the field of evaluation and intervention research.
  • to combine quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis methods (triangulation).
  • Plan, evaluate, and conduct studies in the field of evaluation and intervention research.
  • Outline the purpose of important descriptive and exploratory methods of quantitative data analysis as well as relevant parametric and non-parametric methods of inferential statistics.
  • Use basic methods of multivariate statistics.

Semester Schedule

The lecture offered by our department is currently offered in the winter semester (and beyond the requirements specified in the module handbook) additionally in the summer semester.
