FLIP-I – Interdisciplinary research-based learning in the practical semester

FLIP-I – Interdisciplinary research-based learning in the practical semester is a university teaching cooperation project at the University of Cologne dedicated to the professionalization of teacher training students in the context of inclusive education. The focus is on scientifically based support for the practical semester through interdisciplinary research and reflection processes. The aim is to establish research-based learning as a fundamental element of professional development in teacher training.

The project brings together students from various teaching subjects and special education focus areas to work on real-life school problems. Qualitative approaches are emphasized in terms of research methodology; thematically, the focus is on current issues (including inclusion, language, digital media, professionalization, etc.).

FLIP-I was launched in 2014 as a collaboration between Falkenstörfer, Keeley, and Zepter at the UzK. While Dr. Caren Keeley (at the Chair of Education and Rehabilitation for People with Intellectual and Complex Disabilities at the UzK) and Prof. Dr. Alexandra-Lavina Zepter (Institute for German Language and Literature II) have continuously carried out and implemented FLIP-I with students at the UzK, Prof. Dr. Sophia Falkenstörfer is resuming FLIP-I in the context of teaching in the practical semester with her start at the UzK as chair holder (Didactics and Digitalization in the Specialized Area of Physical and Motor Development, April 2025), Prof. Dr. Sophia Falkenstörfer will resume FLIP-I in the context of teaching in the practical semester.

The project has been documented several times in scientific articles on teacher training and presented in university teaching contexts. It is continuously being developed and evaluated.
