Can I also apply if I only receive my Abitur certificate after the date of the aptitude test?
Yes, in this case please send us a provisional Abitur certificate and submit a certified copy of your Abitur certificate as soon as you receive it. Passing your Abitur is a prerequisite for your studies.

How do I know that my application for the aptitude test has been received?
Your application will be checked for completeness upon receipt and confirmed by e-mail.

Can I bring my portfolio to you in person or are only digital portfolios accepted?
No, analogue portfolios are not accepted.

When will I receive feedback on the result of the aptitude test?
You will be informed of the result of your aptitude test by post no later than 30 days after the end of the application deadline.

How long is the proof of artistic aptitude valid for?
The proof of aptitude test is valid for two years, i.e. you can still apply for a study place two years after passing the aptitude test.

Can I re-apply for an aptitude test the following year if my application was not successful?
Yes, please tick the appropriate box on the application form.

Can I apply for different teaching programmes? And if I have been awarded an aptitude test for Secondary II, can I subsequently enrol for Secondary I, HRGe and SoPäd?
Yes, you can tick one, several or all four school types on the application form. The requirements for the portfolio for the school types Sek I, HRGe, SoPäd and Sek II GymGe are the same. Proof of artistic aptitude is issued for all three teaching qualifications. An exception is the change from primary school teaching to secondary I or secondary II, in which case a subsequent examination is carried out.

I have already successfully taken part in an aptitude test at another university or art college. Is this sufficient proof of artistic aptitude for a degree programme in art at the University of Cologne?
No, you must always take the aptitude test in art at the University of Cologne.

I would like to apply for a place on a Master's programme, do I have to take the aptitude test again?
If you have completed a Bachelor's degree in art, you do not have to take the aptitude test again. This also applies if you have a degree from an art college.

How many works should my portfolio contain?
The examples of work in the digital application portfolio must contain at least four media (three media in the case of an application for the primary school teaching degree), which you can choose freely: Artistic work with digital media, three-dimensional design, conceptual processes, performance, collage, printmaking, photography, painting, textiles, video, drawing.

Can I also show images of my sketchbook in the portfolio?
In addition to the required number of works, an insight into your sketchbook can be useful in order to make work processes comprehensible. Please label these pages clearly as sketches.

How can I present videos?
Videos can be documented in the portfolio with a series of video stills and should be made accessible with a link to Vimeo or YouTube.

How many media must my portfolio contain?
The work examples must contain at least four media (three media for an application for a primary school teaching degree), which you can choose freely from the following areas: Collage, digital media, three-dimensional design, printmaking, conceptual processes, photography, painting, textiles, video, drawing, performance. You can upload videos to YouTube or Vimeo and make them accessible via a link in your application portfolio.
