Short Biography
Julia Gorges studied Business Informatics at the Mannheim University of Cooperative Education from 1998 to 2001 and Educational Science at the University of Cologne from 2003 to 2007. She earned her Ph.D. from 2008 to 2012 in the Educational Psychology research group at Bielefeld University on the topic “Out of sight, out of mind? An Expectancy-Value-Theoretical Analysis of Adult Learners’ Motivation” and subsequently worked as a postdoc at Bielefeld University, including on the BiProfessional project of the Quality Initiative for Teacher Education. In October 2019, Prof. Dr. Gorges accepted an appointment to a W2 professorship in Educational Science with a focus on Empirical Educational Research at Philipps University of Marburg. Since March 2025, she has been a W3 professor of research methods at the University of Cologne. Prof. Dr. Gorges has secured and led various externally funded projects, including the BMBF project “Bielefeld Continuing Education Concept for Cooperation in Inclusive Schools” (BiFoKi, 2018–2021) and the ongoing DFG project “Motivated Participation in Educational Programs at Adult Education Centers” (MoveIn@VHS, 2023–2026). Her research focuses on the conditions for success in designing an inclusive education system, on learning and achievement motivation across the life course, and on goal conflicts in educational contexts.
