Language Use of English Speaking Students

(Boenisch, 2011-2013)

Abstract:

Vocabulary selection presents numerous challenges for professionals working with individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Professionals aim to select vocabulary that is relevant, age appropriate and facilitative of social interaction and language development. To that end, they often rely on lists of core vocabulary words elaborated from typically developing children or adults. This study analyzes the core vocabulary used by typically developing school-aged children in the United States. The language of typically developing children, some of whom spoke English as a second language was recorded, transcribed and analyzed to identify the most frequently used words across samples.
