Beschreibung

Description

The increased use of digital media in educational processes raises the question of the extent to which they can contribute to participation in education. This relationship is particularly relevant for young refugees, for whom digital media are supposed to open up new learning and educational opportunities at a low-threshold level. However, the fact that digital media have a corresponding effect is by no means to be taken for granted, but requires a detailed examination with regard to the potentials and challenges of digitized educational arrangements in formal, non-formal and informal educational areas. The study funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the funding line "Digitization in the Education Sector - Basic Questions and Conditions for Success" starts at this point: The three-year ethnographic collaborative research project aims to reconstruct conditions for success for the "educational participation of refugees in the context of digitized educational arrangements" (BIGEDIB) in terms of the inclusion of young refugees in formal, non-formal and informal educational contexts. By means of an interdisciplinary perspective, the role of digital media in the non-formal educational context of child and youth welfare (location Cologne) and in the formal educational context of school (location Lüneburg) as well as their medial relations to informal educational and appropriation processes will be considered. The focus is on both the pedagogically unplanned 'implicit' media use of young refugees, such as the use of personal smartphones and social media, and the pedagogically planned, i.e. the 'explicit' use of digital media (learning with media, including educational software) as well as the reflexive engagement with the topic of media (learning about media) in the respective educational arrangements. Three ethnographic field phases as well as artifact analyses (Lueger/Froschauer 2018) of the digital media used in the field will be conducted at both sites, starting from the institutions of child and youth welfare and the school, respectively. Here, ten young people aged 12 to 19 are accompanied in the field at each site and their educational experiences in the context of digital media are reconstructed (including via ethnographic interviews with young people and educational professionals, e.g., professionals and managers in child and youth welfare institutions, teachers, and school administrators). The data collection and evaluation is done by means of Grounded Theory (Strauss/Corbin 1996).
