Human performance is almost always worse when people try to multi-task than when they focus on a single task. Experiments investigating the causes of these performance decrements have mostly used the psychological refractory period (PRP) paradigm, and the results have led many to conclude that multi-tasking performance is limited by a central decision process that can only be used for one task at a time—that is, by a structural bottleneck. In this talk I describe a series of experiments with the prioritized processing paradigm—an alternative to the PRP paradigm with several advantages for the study of multi-tasking. The results of these experiments are incompatible with structural bottleneck models. They suggest that under some circumstances the central decision process can work on multiple tasks simultaneously, though with limited capacity.

Der Vortrag findet um 14 Uhr in Raum S 107 im IBW-Gebäude statt (Herbert-Lewin-Str. 2, 3. OG).
