Paths of Transition in Education – Requalification of (Recently) Immigrated and Refugee Teachers in Europe and Beyond

Requalification programmes for (recently) immigrated and refugee teachers support the vocational inclusion of teachers into the school systems of European countries and beyond. Public education systems demand a specific range of qualifications for entering into the respective school systems as a labour market. These regulations often lead to the formal de-professionalisation of highly-skilled migrants whose academic and practical qualifications are not recognised. Against this background, some universities have set up programmes to support their re-entry into professional teaching.

Information on the conference programme and registration will be provided by the end of December 2020. If you are interested in participating in the conference, please contact us at this e-mail address: conference-requal@ph-weingarten.de

Areas of interest

  • Best-practice-examples of requalification programmes for teachers,
  • Commented course curricula and module structures of such programmes concerning topics like education and didactics, language learning and multilingualism, heterogeneity and discrimination,
  • Paths of transition in educational systems and experiences with internship schools and alumni work,
  • Theoretical and methodological issues and challenges in research on teacher migration,
  • Empirical data and implications in the field,
  • (Inter-)national networks and project planning.

Contributions to the Conference

Contributions should take the form of a 20-minute input and can be done in different forms such as presentations, podcasts, videos, etc. A basic perspective of the R/EQUAL partnership is the participatory approach. We therefore encourage immigrated teachers/alumni taking part in requalification programmes to send in a proposal, to engage in a joint presentation with lecturers/researchers and/or to be part at the online conference as attendees.

While the conference language is English, some sessions may be held in other languages or be multilingual, depending on the contributions and needs of the attendees. If you have any questions or requests regarding presentations in further languages, please contact us.

Please submit presentation proposals, in English, by 30 November 2020 to: conference-requal@ph-weingarten.de and include the following information: title of the abstract, first and last name of the author(s), name of institution(s), contact details, abstract (max. 500 words), references and the preferred format of your input (presentation, slides and audio, podcasts, videos, etc.). Information on the conference programme and registration will be provided by the end of December 2020.

Further information

Upon submitting your presentation, you agree to the abstract being published online in the abstract volume of the online conference and your presentation being available to all attendees who have signed the conference.

Depending on the countries from which contributions are submitted and the attendees taking part, time slots for the two-day conference will be adjusted to allow for the participation of guests from all parts of the world.
